When talking about his past in the TV industry, actor and former Urkel, Jaleel White, can't seem to separate money and memories.
When Vanity Fair asked Jaleel to take them through what it was like to lose out on some roles, like Rudy Huxtable (which wasn't exactly intended to be a girl), he did so:
“The rest of us all went home crying. It was amazing. Obviously, I’m grateful that things worked out the way they did; I think it put a little more money in my pocket.
"Let’s get something straight: All of these rejections resulted in me making a s–load of money elsewhere."
He even made mention of how he loved playing Steve Urkel, and that it wasn't that he was very tired of it, but that he was growing and couldn't conform himself to stay in that character's appearance. Also, it made him a lot of money:
“I loved playing those characters…If I were Bart Simpson and I were animated, I’d still be on the air right now. I knew physically I had made certain sacrifices to keep that property alive that just couldn’t be made anymore. I wasn’t changing my hair; I was staying out of the gym. To be honest, I was retarding my own growth as a man in order to maintain the authenticity to what I thought that character should be.
“It’s not overly sophisticated. I’m the highest paid black kid in the history of television, just so you understand that. I was trying to prolong the checks!”
We get it, Jaleel! You've made money and you have money! There's no need to talk about it that often during an interview. All we're saying is that it just sounds a little conceited!
Though it IS fascinating to hear about the Rudy Huxtable character. It all worked out for you in the end though, and we're glad we had so many years of Urkel!
